Are you working IN your business or ON your business?

Thursday, January 4, 2024

To continue from last month’s time management article, we want to focus this month on working ON your business rather than IN your business.

What is the difference?Goals, plans & strategy

Working IN your business means working on tasks that can be completed by an employee such as being out on a job site swinging a hammer, doing job specific paperwork, installing lighting and appliances, and overall job management.

Working ON your business, however, refers to working on sales, marketing, strategic planning, growing partnerships and relationships, and developing your vision for the future.

So, as a small business owner, how do you accomplish this with all the different hats you have to wear to make your business run?

Set aside time to look at the bigger picture. The best way to do this is to block out a fixed time such as one day a week and schedule it into your calendar. Are you heading in the right direction with your business? Take an honest look at yourself and evaluate your success. Are there spots where you can use extra help to be successful? Are there areas where you need to redirect more time and energy for success?

For example, if one of your strengths is not finance, then look to consult with an expert to assist you with your financial strategy to help you plan and meet the goals you want for your business.

Keep in mind that the time you spend working ON your business is never wasted time. The best investment is yourself.
