From Farm Life to Building Neighborhoods
Dan’s introduction to building began on his family farm, where constructing sheds, barns, and outbuildings was part of daily life. “This gave me the knack for building,” he recalls. As nearby subdivisions grew, so did the demand for his skills. What started with helping local developers soon became a full-fledged career.

Dan’s transition to building homes came naturally. “I wanted a new home and called Wick Homes to build it,” he shares. Recognizing an opportunity, Dan joined Wick Homes. Though the company eventually closed, his fondness for panelized homes led him to Amwood Building Systems in 2022.

Now a seasoned builder with 18 years of experience, Dan has completed three homes with Amwood, with two more in progress. “Amwood has been a great partner,” he says, reflecting on the collaboration that has allowed him to expand his offerings and refine his craft.

A Business Model Built on Simplicity and Success
Dan’s business focuses primarily on spec homes. “I prefer specs because people make so many changes in custom homes,” he explains. While custom homes may be more profitable, Dan enjoys the straightforward process of spec homes.

Most of the homes Dan builds are starter homes, catering to buyers with fixed budgets. Many of these buyers work in the medical field or other local industries in the Galesburg area. The homes are typically priced at $400,000 and up.

Marketing with a Personal Touch
Dan’s leads come largely from word-of-mouth and referrals from subcontractors. “Many people drive by and see the homes we’re working on,” he says. Yard signs, business cards, and a trusted realtor also help spread the word.

Building for the Future
Over his career, Dan has built hundreds of homes. Ranch-style homes dominate Dan’s portfolio, but he is considering building duplexes near schools to meet growing demand.

Family and Hobbies: The Heart of Dan’s Life
Dan’s wife, Cathy, a retired nurse, has been a constant support throughout his career. Together, they have five children and three grandchildren scattered across the U.S., from Oregon to Texas.

Dan has some fascinating hobbies outside of work. As a licensed pilot, he often flies over work sites to check on progress from the air. He’s also an avid trap shooter, participating in local clay pigeon leagues.
