Builder Corner: Burback Builders

With over 45 years of experience, Burback Builders has become a trusted name in Muskego, Wisconsin. This family-owned business is led by second-generation owner Jared Burback, who carries on the legacy started by his father, Rick Burback. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jared to learn more about his journey in the building industry and how Burback Builders has grown into the successful company it is today.

Born Into the Building Industry

Jared’s path into construction was inevitable—he was born into it. His father founded Burback Builders in 1979, and from a young age, Jared was captivated by the world of construction.

“I’ve never thought about doing anything else. Ever since I was a kid, everything else was an afterthought. All that mattered was construction.”

Jared officially took over the business in 2008, but his passion for building has been lifelong. He fondly remembers accompanying his father to job sites, learning the ropes hands-on, and solidifying his commitment to the trade.

A Long Partnership with Amwood Building Systems
Burback Builders has been an Amwood dealer since 1979, a relationship that began with Rick Burback and Gene Scott and continues to this day with their sons Jared Burback and Doug Scott.

“I remember when I was 5, my dad was building a house right down the road from my school. We somehow convinced my teacher and my dad to let my kindergarten class take a ‘field trip’ to see an Amwood house get set. When I took over the business, I figured if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”

This longstanding partnership has been integral to the company’s growth and success over the years.

Custom Homes, Multifamily Units, and More
Burback Builders interiorBurback Builders offers a wide range of services, from custom homes and multifamily units to remodeling and land developments. Jared explains that while most of their custom homes are built through contracts, they also handle spec homes and model homes. Since 2000, they’ve built hundreds of multifamily units, and approximately 25% of their work focuses on large-scale remodeling projects, often averaging $500,000 for major additions.

“We’ve built a strong brand over the years, and much of our work comes through referrals. We’re fortunate to have a great reputation in the community.”

A Local Approach to MarketingBurback Builders exterior
While referrals are a key source of leads, Burback Builders has also invested heavily in community involvement and local marketing. Jared’s strategy is simple: get the Burback Builders name on everything in the area.

“We sponsor every activity in our community, and yard signs are a big thing for us. We don’t just place them on job sites; we put up directional signs leading people to our projects.”

This grassroots marketing approach has helped the company maintain a strong presence in the community.

Building Homes for Every Taste
When it comes to style, Burback Builders doesn’t focus on a single design aesthetic. Instead, they prioritize creating homes that meet their clients’ unique needs and preferences.

“We build whatever the customer wants. Some I’m extremely proud of, others not as much—but at the end of the day, it’s about delivering what the customer envisions.”

The price range of their homes generally falls between $700,000 and $1,000,000, and they’ve built both smaller and larger projects.

Burback familyFamily and Giving Back
Jared speaks with pride not only about his business but also about his family. He has been married for 21 years to his wife, Melissa who is a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual, and together they have two daughters: Mikayla, 15, and Avry, 10.

Mikayla has complex medical needs, including a seizure disorder that requires around-the-clock care. Burback Builders’ dedication to family is evident in how they’ve incorporated their personal lives into their community efforts. They have two golden retrievers—one is a service dog for Mikayla, and the other is a certified therapy dog they take to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and local schools to uplift kids.

Avry was born on the fourth of July and she is a firecracker! She has been through a lot because of her big sister. As a result, she has had to mature beyond her years. Avry has found joy in giving back to the community as well. She helps the family organize a toy drive, helps to shop, and deliver the toys to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin during the holidays.Burback family event for Children's Wisconsin

“I’m thankful to be in a position where we can give back and make an impact at the hospital that has saved my daughter’s life multiple times.”
