Builder Corner: WW Builders

WW Builders, owned and operated by Rick Tucker, has been a staple in Poynette, Wisconsin, for many years. Rick’s journey in the building industry started long before he settled in Wisconsin, though, and his story is one of craftsmanship, family values, and loyalty to both his clients and his trade partners. Here’s a glimpse into Rick’s experience as a builder and his connection with Amwood Building Systems.

Rick’s passion for building started with his father, an architectural engineer who specialized in concrete work. “I worked with my dad as a teen, doing construction in Georgia,” Rick recalls. Though born in Wisconsin, he spent 34 years in Georgia, where he learned the ins and outs of the building trade. His father would handle the designs, and Rick took on the role of a general contractor, working on commercial projects and developments.

“My dad was a big influence on my life,” says Rick. “I was also a certified concrete engineer in Georgia.” This combination of family mentorship and professional expertise set the foundation for a successful career. In the late 1990s, Rick moved back to Wisconsin and continued his work as a general contractor. Today, Rick builds 3-5 homes a year, in addition to working on commercial projects.

Joining Amwood Building Systems

Rick’s connection with Amwood began in 2017 when he was introduced to the company by Virgil Waugh. After touring Amwood’s plant, Rick quickly saw the value in the system. “When I saw the plant, I realized how different it was from modular building,” Rick shares. He often encourages potential clients to tour the plant, as he believes seeing the process firsthand showcases the difference between modular construction and panelized components.

Rick points out that one of the biggest benefits of working with Amwood is how quickly homes are protected from the elements. “In Wisconsin’s weather, it’s a huge advantage to get the home out of the elements in days rather than weeks or months, like traditional stick framing,” he explains.

Over the years, Rick has honed his business model, focusing on spec homes and commercial buildings. “I used to do remodeling, but now I pick and choose the projects I want to do,” Rick says. He remains loyal to his subcontractors, many of whom he has worked with for over a decade.

When it comes to leads, Rick’s business thrives on referrals. He doesn’t do any marketing and relies on word of mouth, particularly from previous clients. His commercial property work comes from a unique connection with a local bakery owner, who is active in helping families establish grocery businesses in the Madison area. These projects, often small commercial builds around 4,000 square feet, are a perfect fit for Rick’s expertise.

Building Philosophy and Style

Rick has always prioritized quality over quantity in his work. At the height of his career in Georgia, he built 16-20 homes per year, never exceeding that number to ensure he could maintain high standards. Since moving back to Wisconsin, he’s built around 15 homes with Amwood.

“I prefer to build starter homes,” Rick shares. The price range for his homes has shifted from around $200K to $400K in recent years, with most of the homes being ranch-style. This timeless design is a favorite among his clients, offering practicality and aesthetic appeal.

Family is central to Rick’s life. He has three children—a 42-year-old daughter, a 39-year-old daughter, and a 36-year-old son—as well as two grandchildren, a 14-year-old grandson and a 12-year-old granddaughter. Rick loves spending time at his lake house in Georgia, especially during the winter months, where he can visit his daughters and grandkids. His son resides in Washington, D.C.

Horses are a big part of Rick’s family life. His daughter and granddaughter are both passionate about horses and participate in equestrian events. “My daughter has grown up with horses and owns several,” Rick says proudly. “They both show equestrian horses.”

A Builder’s Perspective on Amwood

As someone who has seen many aspects of the building industry, Rick appreciates the personal connection he has with Amwood. “Dave Dorn is great, and the plant is amazing. Everyone at Amwood is wonderful,” Rick notes. However, he hopes the company maintains its close-knit feel. “I really hope they don’t get too big because big companies often lose what makes them great—the personal connection.”

Rick Tucker’s journey from Georgia to Wisconsin, from learning the trade alongside his father to building homes with Amwood, is a testament to his dedication to quality craftsmanship, loyalty to his team, and commitment to his clients. Through WW Builders, Rick continues to create homes and commercial properties that stand the test of time.
